28/04/2009- Where I am right now, a reflection.

Tue Apr 28, 2009, 2:23 AM
Hello, it's been even longer than "a while" this time.

So, at art college on the foundation course I specialised in animation. You can see my endeavours on my youtube page here- [link] it's a lot of fun, and I love the results; but hand drawn animation is extremely tedious and soul-destroying at times! You have so much work to do that you have to get yourself into a vaguely trance-like state in order to keep going; but whilst in that state you end up thinking and over-analysing your life a lot- thus the soul-destroying part. I get miserable as sin! Avoid me when I've got a big assignment due, that's what I mean to say!

It got to the point where I had to apply for a degree, and I realised that I didn't really know what I wanted to do with my life still. The foundation course didn't really give me many more answers- just more questions. I'd been enjoying animation, sure, but I'd only been doing it for 3 months and didn't really know if I wanted to go through this soul destroying process for the rest of my life. I looked at jobs, to see what I could aspire to become from doing a degree in animation, and when you get to the top, the salary is very, very good, at a lot of companies. However obviously that takes a long time, and before that there's the long slog of being a junior animator that doesn't have so much of a creative role. Also, most companies are looking for CGI animators, which involves knowledge of maths which I'm not in full posession of. So I didn't apply to uni.

Instead, I applied for a job. I decided that I needed to try out a few things first before going on to do a degree. I applied for a position as an assistant games producer at a flash-based computer games company who are full of awesome. I got through the first and second round without a degree, to my surprise, and I had an interview. The interview went quite well, I got on with the staff well and managed to answer most of their questions, however didn't secure the job in the end. I could have prepared for it better, and I have not had a big interview like that before (only a few job interviews for salaries that are less than minimum wage and completely impersonal!), so was inexperienced on that front too. However, I wrote back to them and asked if I could have an internship instead. And they've offered me one.

So, after uni ends (May 14th) I will be doing an internship for a few months with this awesome company (Mediatonic- some of their games are on adultswim and other sites) and I can't wait!

I'm really happy to have this opportunity and hope to make the most of it. I'm going to keep a reflective journal of my time there, so that I can look back on what I've learnt which will help me in the future when applying to jobs, uni etc. And an internship at such an innovative company will surely work in my favour in the future. I'm really excited.

On a personal note, things are a bit messy. On the creative side, this is a plus, because it means that I will generate a hell of a lot of work to vent that, instead of loafing around doing nothing. In January I split up with my long term boyfriend of nearly 4 years. Rather, I left him. Not going to go into details online. Things since then have just confused me, I don't know what I want. I am definitely not over him- that is the only certain thing right now.

I've written a lot of piano music lately, well some are unfinished but... if you want to hear the poor recordings, head over to my music myspace page: [link] I will get some better recordings in the summer when I have time.

Also check out my band, and come to our gigs in the summer!!! [link]

I will upload some more art soon, to show you what I've been up to lately.

Thanks for reading, amazing if you got this far!!
